Summary

The New York Times bestseller, Win Every Argument is the ultimate guide to debate, persuasion and public speaking, by award-winning British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan。

'A masterclass from one of the most formidable debaters and interviewers of our time' – Riz Ahmed

Arguments are everywhere – and especially given the fierce debates we’re all embroiled in today, everyone wants to win。 In this riveting guide to the art of argument, Mehdi Hasan shows you how to communicate with confidence, rise above the tit for tats on social media, and triumph in a successful and productive debate in the real world。

Arguments help us solve problems, uncover new ideas we might not have considered, and nudge our disagreements toward mutual understanding。 A good argument, made in good faith, has intrinsic value – and can also simply be fun。

As a journalist, anchor, and interviewer who has clashed with politicians, spy chiefs, and celebrities from across the world, Hasan reveals his tricks of the trade for the first time。 Whether you are making a presentation at work or debating current political issues with a friend, Hasan will teach you how to sharpen your speaking skills to make the winning case。

A great book on persuasion – not a regurgitation of the old science of debate (although that's there as well), but a very well structured guide on how to get better at it。 A great book on persuasion – not a regurgitation of the old science of debate (although that's there as well), but a very well structured guide on how to get better at it。 。。。more

I really admire Mehdi in his debates, shows, etc。 His book was pretty good too: lots of useful advice from an admirable orator, latest research, and clear breakdowns of topics。 There are a lot of speech and debate guides out there that cover similar ideas, but if you admire his work and want to learn about debates, speeches, communication, then it’s a splendid buy

Not much novel ideas, pretty generic。

4。5 Very practical, thoughtful, and well delivered, Mehdi walks the walk。 I’ve heard him as a guest many times on Pod Save America and follow him on social media and have always been impressed, so I made sure to seek out his book and am glad I did。 He gives tons of useful tips and tricks to win arguments, be a good listener, anticipate what your opponent will say and how to effectively counter。 A worthy read。

Caveat: I listened to this as an audiobook, and though I listened carefully, I did not strictly speaking “read this book”。It’s a good book for brushing up on some of the basics of discussion, debate, and public speaking, though the best applications are those for speaking publicly。 I appreciate Hasan’s emphasis on doing your research and providing an easy to follow structure in what you are saying。 There’s some nuggets in the book as well I had never heard before。 One piece of advice in building Caveat: I listened to this as an audiobook, and though I listened carefully, I did not strictly speaking “read this book”。It’s a good book for brushing up on some of the basics of discussion, debate, and public speaking, though the best applications are those for speaking publicly。 I appreciate Hasan’s emphasis on doing your research and providing an easy to follow structure in what you are saying。 There’s some nuggets in the book as well I had never heard before。 One piece of advice in building confidence is to randomly challenge a coworker or friend to a friendly argument。 I think that’s a fun idea。Overall, the book has one critical flaw in its ethos that I happen to disagree with。 It’s ultimately a book about winning。 It’s about building the strongest argument to defeat your opponent, ways to improve your image and dilute the image of your opponent, etc。 The problem is if everyone took this approach, as people often do, they would lose the forest for the trees。 Discourse should be about pursuing truth and debating the merits of different arguments。 Not about scoring a win on people。 。。。more

I coached debate and I've taught public speaking for a long time。 I love this book。 Hasan does a great job integrating scholarly research and his own experiences as a journalist in this book。 I am teaching communicating effectively in the fall, and this book got me thinking about some different ways to approach class material。 I coached debate and I've taught public speaking for a long time。 I love this book。 Hasan does a great job integrating scholarly research and his own experiences as a journalist in this book。 I am teaching communicating effectively in the fall, and this book got me thinking about some different ways to approach class material。 。。。more

I went into reading this book wanting some insight into the tools I currently use in debate (not that I debate much, but everyone has a style of sorts) and to see where I could add improvement。 I wasn't disappointed。 I think the book is worthwhile, and I look forward to adapting Hasan's strategies which largely extend into the preparatory realm before the debate itself even happens。I do think the book should come with two caveats。 First, reading a book on how to win every argument doesn't mean y I went into reading this book wanting some insight into the tools I currently use in debate (not that I debate much, but everyone has a style of sorts) and to see where I could add improvement。 I wasn't disappointed。 I think the book is worthwhile, and I look forward to adapting Hasan's strategies which largely extend into the preparatory realm before the debate itself even happens。I do think the book should come with two caveats。 First, reading a book on how to win every argument doesn't mean you're capable of such a feat immediately after reading it。Second, for men at least, you should understand that this book discusses the art of political debate。 It is not - not necessarily anyway - valuable for relational debate (especially with members of the opposite sex)。 That's more of a Debate 2。0 or 3。0 level event。 Use for that purpose at your own risk! 。。。more

I came to this book after listening to Hasan’s interview on Pod Save America。 I was surprised by how interesting this book was。 It includes not only some great public speaking tips, but really interesting anecdotes from history and his personal experience。

An author interview pulled in me, but……there was more politics than guidance and the guidance was more a recitation of advice from others than anything original。 The reader is treated to a litany of debate wins from the author — his book, so that’s fair。 If you’re a fan of Mr。 Had an on TV, you’ll likely enjoy this。 I’ve never seen him on TV, so I went in with an open mind and hoping to learn。 I learned that the author used this as a way to promote his political interests。 That’s not what I sign An author interview pulled in me, but……there was more politics than guidance and the guidance was more a recitation of advice from others than anything original。 The reader is treated to a litany of debate wins from the author — his book, so that’s fair。 If you’re a fan of Mr。 Had an on TV, you’ll likely enjoy this。 I’ve never seen him on TV, so I went in with an open mind and hoping to learn。 I learned that the author used this as a way to promote his political interests。 That’s not what I signed up for as a reader。 。。。more

I have not finished the book yet but the first several chapters that I read fascinated me a lot。 The author has dissected the art of debating in a very simple way with a lot of practical examples。 So, It tops the list of my favorite books now。 thanks for writing it。

Reads as a practical guide for the skills on the cover, and works! It was hard not to hear Mehdi's voice as I was reading this, having seen him so many times in video。 He draws from a wealth of experience engaging with a smorgasbord of prominent public figures on timely topics。 Perhaps I shouldn't find it so surprising that he spends so much time researching。 He's right -- it does seem spontaneous while 90% of one's success is decided before the speech/interview/debate。I appreciate that Mehdi re Reads as a practical guide for the skills on the cover, and works! I picked this book up to prepare for Toastmasters and the information was overall helpful。 I probably won’t need to use the debate strategies presented but it will be fun to watch and analyze public debates now that I know more about common tactics。 I’m also glad to learn about speech and debate from someone who isn’t a large white man。*** Also I highly recommend the audiobook format。 It contains actual recordings from famous debates which is more helpful and entertaining than reading transcript I picked this book up to prepare for Toastmasters and the information was overall helpful。 I probably won’t need to use the debate strategies presented but it will be fun to watch and analyze public debates now that I know more about common tactics。 I’m also glad to learn about speech and debate from someone who isn’t a large white man。*** Also I highly recommend the audiobook format。 It contains actual recordings from famous debates which is more helpful and entertaining than reading transcripts。 。。。more

Well thought out, well written with excellent advice and concrete examples。 A book about debating may sound boring but Mr。 Hasan ensures it is not, especially if you listen to the audiobook because you can hear his inflection as well as clips from some debate appearances (his and others) to illustrate his points。 He's also a touch snarky, which I always enjoy。 I read this through my library but I may have to buy a copy to have handy。 Well thought out, well written with excellent advice and concrete examples。 A book about debating may sound boring but Mr。 Hasan ensures it is not, especially if you listen to the audiobook because you can hear his inflection as well as clips from some debate appearances (his and others) to illustrate his points。 He's also a touch snarky, which I always enjoy。 I read this through my library but I may have to buy a copy to have handy。 。。。more

This book is a delight。 The content of which I felt was worthwhile, but I think Hasan does a great job using personal examples to demonstrate technique。 I think at times he spoke a little too quickly but Audible allows one to adjust speed so that isn't really a big deal。 No points lost for that。 I truly enjoyed Hasan's passion for debate; that he relishes disagreement。 I picked this book up primarily because I do, too。 The other element to the audiobook version that I really liked were audio cli This book is a delight。 The content of which I felt was worthwhile, but I think Hasan does a great job using personal examples to demonstrate technique。 I think at times he spoke a little too quickly but Audible allows one to adjust speed so that isn't really a big deal。 No points lost for that。 I truly enjoyed Hasan's passion for debate; that he relishes disagreement。 I picked this book up primarily because I do, too。 The other element to the audiobook version that I really liked were audio clips from other speeches or engagements that he had participated in, which really gave the whole experience more of a podcast feel and less like a book being read to you。 At times it felt as though I was sitting in a lecture, or listening to a conversation。 This book is worth both the read, and a listen。 。。。more
